The Annual HBCU Rubin-Dixon College Tour Experience

The College Tour was started in 2010 with two 15-passenger vans and a group of motivated students. Olivia P. Rubin, who now sits on the board of directors, was amongst that group. Aside from the excitement of the Honda Battle of the bands, this trip was an incentive for High School students who were seeking to attend an HBCU or College out of state. Blake E. Odum, who was the Director of Workshops for the FlintSource at the time, along with Jeremy Tyler took approximately 20 high school students to visit Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University. Olivia, now a graduate of Bennett College, was among that group of 20 students that year who lodged at the Embassy Suites of Buckhead, GA, enjoyed the annual Honda Battle of the Bands at the Georgia Dome and visited the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site; where students had the opportunity to view the birth home, church, and grave site of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. After this experience, Blake E. Odum made this an annual event, at the request of the students.
Blake E. Odum exercises his passion through this non-profit project, which has been successfully supported by sponsors who make it possible for students to attend, year after year. There are currently over 100 students whom have attended this college tour and are academically accelerating at various HBCU's throughout the country.
Of those students, a young man by the name of Terrance Patton-Hill who went on this journey, was initially denied admittance into Morehouse College. Blake encouraged this student to pursue his goal and not to settle for anything less than what he desired. After we advocated for him to meet with the admissions office, a meeting was set with the Dean of Admissions during our visit that year. Terrance is now a graduate of Morehouse College. He is the first HBCU graduate who attended our College Tour. The Motivational Foundation has been very instrumental in creating many more success stories just like this one.
We recently renamed our college tour in honor of one of our generous sponsors, Dr. Joyce Martin Dixon. Dr. Dixon is a graduate of Bennett College and wishes to see more young minorities attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
